A Academia de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas norte-americana divulgou as shortlists de dez categorias, ou seja, os filmes finalistas da 95.ª edição dos Óscares na categoria de Melhor Documentário, Melhor Documentário Curta-Metragem, Melhor Filme Internacional, Melhor Maquilhagem e Penteado, Melhor Banda Sonora Original, Melhor Canção Original, Melhor Animação Curta-Metragem, Melhor Curta-Metragem de Imagem Real, Melhores Efeitos Visuais e Melhor Som.
Na categoria de Filme Internacional foram 92 os países que submeteram candidatura, tendo sido pré-seleccionados 15 filmes a votação final: “All Quiet on the Western Front” (Alemanha), “Argentina, 1985” (Argentina), “Corsage” (Áustria), “Decision to Leave” (Coreia do Sul), “Close” (Bélgica), “Return to Seoul” (Camboja), “Holy Spider” (Dinamarca), “Saint Omer” (França), “Last Film Show” (Índia), “The Quiet Girl” (Irlanda), “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” (México), “The Blue Caftan” (Marrocos), “Joyland” (Paquistão), “EO” (Polónia), “Cairo Conspiracy” (Suécia). Os filmes da Coreia do Sul, Bélgica, Alemanha, Argentina e Dinamarca são apontados como os favoritos à nomeação final.
Portugal, que tinha submetido “Alma Viva”, da realizadora luso-francesa Cristèle Alves Meira, continua a não conseguir a nomeação para o Óscar. É a 39.ª vez que Portugal fica fora da corrida para Melhor Filme Internacional, aumentando assim um recorde negativo, desde 1980, como o país que mais vezes submeteu candidaturas nesta categoria, sem nunca chegar às nomeações dos Óscares.
No entanto, o cinema português continua a estar representado nos Óscares 2023 com três curtas-metragens: uma na categoria de Curta-Metragem de Imagem Real “O Lobo Solitário”, de Filipe Melo; e duas na categoria de Curta-Metragem de Animação, “Ice Merchants”, de João Gonzalez, e “O Homem do Lixo”, de Laura Gonçalves. Três filmes que têm conquistado vários prémios nacionais e internacionais, sendo o filme de Filipe Melo uma produção da Força de Produção, e as curtas-metragens de animação produzidas pela COLA Animation e pela Bando à Parte, respectivamente.
No passado, o cinema português já tinha chegado às shortlists pelo menos duas vezes com “História Trágica com Final Feliz” em 2006 e “Tio Tomás, A Contabilidade dos Dias” em 2019, ambas de Regina Pessoa, mas sem nunca conseguir uma nomeação ao prémio mais desejado de Hollywood.
A votação para as nomeações finais começa no dia 12 de janeiro de 2023 e decorre até dia 17 do mesmo mês. Os nomeados serão anunciados a 24 de janeiro e a cerimónia da 95.ª edição dos Óscares será a 12 de março de 2023, no Dolby Theatre.
